Honor Society keyboardist/guitarist Jason Rosen says his band’s music sounds deceptively simple. That belies the fact that two founding members — Rosen and lead vocalist/guitarist Michael Bruno — graduated from Boston’s Berklee School of Music and the New York University School of Music, respectively.
Also, bassist Andrew Lee is an alumnus of Hartford School of Music.
“There’s a lot that gets thrown at you,” Rosen said during a telephone interview from Philadelphia. “There’s a lot of theory and a lot of performance stuff and music technology stuff.”
Rosen said there was so much that all the learning didn’t really set in until after he graduated.
“We draw upon those educational practices,” he said. “They are like tools in our toolbox.”
Music has always been an important part of Rosen’s life. When he was young, his parents introduced him to the Beatles, Motown and ’50s and ’60s doo wop groups.
“Later on I definitely got into Stevie Wonder because of the keyboards and his use of synths. And then I got into a lot of prog-rock like Yes. And in the ’80s there was definitely Michael Jackson and then Prince.”
Rosen’s first instrument was piano.
“My family had gotten a piano from my grandma,” he said. “Later on I started playing guitar and the drums.
“I think it’s cool to be able to play different instruments. And having an understanding of multiple instruments helps with the arrangements and stuff. (more…)
What thin line divides a band like Honor Society from the The Jonas Brothers? Why is Miley Cyrus selling out stadiums while Esmee Denters plays to a crowd of just a few hundred? Musically you could stand Esmee Denters single “Outta Here” and Honor Society “Over You” against the songs from either the Jonas Brothers or Miley Cyrus’s, but in the business of big pop bands, music is only part of the equation.
Both Esmee Denters and Honor Society got their breaks through various social networks. Esmee was discovered doing covers of her favorite songs on YouTube while Honor Society found their following via MySpace. As they played to a small but devoted following, many of the teens in the crowd sang along to almost every word of every song. As Esmee finished her set, she stopped and took a picture of the crowd to post on her twitter account (@emseeeworld). Honor Society spent more time after their show meeting their fans than they did playing to them. This kind of personal connection between artist and fan is something that’s being taken to an entirely new level. But it is enough? (more…)

Honor Society dropped by the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles on Friday afternoon for an acoustic set and Q&A session. The event was party of the museum’s Backstage Pass program where the group had the chance to talk to students who are interested in working in the music business and answer questions.
Tomorrow (October 17), Michael, Jason, Alex & Andrew will be at the Grove in LA at noon at Barnes and Noble. Be sure to go say hi. Then catch them at the House of Blues on Sunset that night.
